Each A project group is to develop a computer-controlled system (for eventual marketing) to manage the environment of large buildings. The group planning this project hopes to carry it out in less than two years and then to market it worldwide. Briefly, their plan is to connect a number of microprocessors together in a network. microprocessor will control some aspect of environment control, such as the operation of baffles to direct warm or cool air where needed. The system is to be controlled by a central computer. It is to be cheap to operate, and this will be achieved (they hope) by making clever use of waste' heat from, say, printing equipment and by using vents and extractor fans, by opening and closing key windows and louvred vents, and by taking into account solar gain and heat radiation from walls. The project leader has not yet been identified. The chief technical individual is a young, bright computer enthusiast who lacks in-depth knowledge of environmental control. The programmers are all experienced, but only one has participated in developing a real-time monitoring and control system. (a) Given that the project is technically feasible, identify seven potential risks. Analyse these risks according to the project's exposure and sensitivity to each risk you have identified. (b) Explain the following ways of dealing with risk: -avoidance -reduction -transferral - contingency planning - acceptance. [10] [5] (c) Suggest ways in which one might seek to reduce the technological risks in the project.
