STEP ONE

• Identify most important problem to work on (prioritize)
• Uses cost information based upon severity and not simply frequency of occurrence.
• Shows information graphically.

STEP TWO

• State the problem.
• Keep it simple.

STEP THREE

• Analyze the causes by getting out on the floor to witness causes.
• You have to go where the problem is occurring to determine causes.
• Cannot sit around a conference brainstorm what you "feel" is the problemyou have to go witness what is causing it.

STEP FOUR:

• Gather data and determine the critical few causes.
• Data is powerful and will direct how the problem gets solved.

STEP FIVE:

• Generate possible solutions.
• Generate more than one solution.
• Build on ideas.

STEP SIX

• Choose the best alternative.
• Pro/Con logical analysis of best choice.

STEP SEVEN

• Develop and implementation plan.
• Etc.

STEP EIGHT

• Measure and follow-up.
