ECO 370: Economics of Piracy. Rollins College. Fall 2017 Philip Kozel. Take-home midterm. Due date: Oct 23rd Instructions: You must answer any one question below in a typed, double spaced, formal essay. Late exams will automatically be marked down one letter grade per day late (this includes any exams which are turned in after 4:00PM, either in person or to my mailbox). NOTE: electronic versions of your papers will not be accepted. This is not a research paper, meaning you do not have to draw on material outside of the course readings and notes (although you can if you are so inclined). Your answer should be direct and concise, limited to a maximum of 2500 words (about 10 pages). While I am most interested in the insights and thoughtfulness you bring to the material (and you will be graded accordingly) be sure to draw upon the assigned literature to sustain and defend the arguments you make. If you choose to quote sources directly, indicate the page location of the reference with in-text references; e.g., (Payer 1977, 15). 1. Describe some of the most important conditions of existence' for maritime piracy, both historical and contemporary; in your answer, be sure to address why piracy often comes in 'waves'. Finally, what might be some of the most effective ways to combat piracy given the rationale you provided for the causes of piracy and why? 2. Although maritime pirates do not produce goods and services, their existence is fundamentally linked with markets and market activity, both locally and globally. How and why is this the case, both historically and contemporarily? (Be specific and expansive as possible). 3. Pirates in the Atlantic 'Golden Age' devised a radially different system of organizing themselves politically and economically from the merchant marine of the time period. Explain why such a system emerged (be sure to draw on Rediker and Leeson) and how it might have: 1) contributed to pirates capturing the prize Popular Imagination and 2) presented a challenge to the existing social order. Finally, do contemporary pirates share any of these political and economic attributes? 4. Pose and then answer carefully a question of your own. The question should not overlap significantly (but, of course, can overlap a bit) with the other question you answer, and it should entail a serious engagement with some of the literature and themes of the course. This is intended for those of you who are curious/interested about an issue or idea that has been raised in class or in the readings, but which is not adequately covered by the above questions. Note: if you choose this option you should present your question, i.e., formally state it, before you answer it. You should also run it by me first (email, etc.). ECO 370: Economics of Piracy.
