Econ 181 Writing Assignment 2 Due June , 7th at 3:30pm (5 Points) In class, I discussed how the opening scenes of the film The Harder They Come represent the rural-to-urban migration decision modeled by Harris-Todaro (discrete choice model of expected wages). In this homework, you will choose a work of art (e.g. a film, painting, novel, poem, sculpture, etc.) and discuss how it relates to one of the economic models we discuss in class. The paper is due before the last lecture of the quarter. You may write on any of the models we discussed AFTER the first midterm, starting with Education and including any models we will discuss in the coming weeks. 2. You must relate the work of art to a specific economic MODEL, and not just an economic CONCEPT. That is, you could discuss how the artwork relates to the economic decision to continue with education and the costs/risks associated with it; but not just the concept of education itself. 3. Grading will be based on: a. Clarity of writing b. Specificity of discussion linking the art and the economic model. Grading Rubric: 3 points (D-): discusses a work of art and an idea from class 4 points (B-): relates aspects of the work of art to a model from class, with a semi coherent discussion, reasonable grammar/diction, but without detail on model. 4.5 points (A-): relates aspects of the work to a model discussed in class, and at least refers to key parameters or tensions in the model and how they are represented in the work of art. 5 points (A+): clearly discusses how a work of art relates to a model from class, discusses how the model parameters/tensions map onto the work of art, uses correct grammar and diction, and discusses the issue in a clear, logical manner. Extra Credit (5.5-8 points): Does everything in an A+ paper, but goes above and beyond in terms of engagement with the work of art, creativity and depth of insight, and/or extensions to (or critiques of) the model inferred from the art but not contained in the original model.
