Question:
"Educational Neglect Case Scenario: What Would You Do?
You get a call on a mother who is not sending her children to school. The school reports the mother had the children miss 75 days of school and it is April 15, 2023 and the kids only have 1 month of school left. The school said they would have called in earlier but they have been trying to work with the mother but she only responds 1/2 the time and always had excuses why the kids missed school such the kids being sick. The kids are 8 and 7 (boy and girl). You go out to the home at 11AM and you find the kids outside playing. The mother says the kids haven't missing 75 days of school, maybe a month or so. She states the kids are always sick and she tells the school when the kids are sick. You ask the mother has she have Doctor notes to show where she took the kids to the Doctor. She says she doesn't have that kind of money for the co-pays so she just gives them cold medicine and keeps them home. The kids appeared not to be sick today as they were playing outside. you asked the mother why the kids were not in school today. She says today they woke up late and they would have already missed 1/2 the day at school so she kept them home. In interviewing the kids, they report they go to school about 2-3 times a week and they said it's because they mom is usually up all night and drinking alcohol and she's took tired to get up and get them ready for school. You asked the kids can they get themselves up for school and they said their mother said if they do that, they will be beaten for leaving the home without the mother's permission. The kids want to go to school because 'we got friends and they give us good food there'. We don't have a lot of food in our home. "
