Clearly communicating your 1) interests 2) skills and 3) values can help your professor get to know you. In the workplace, being able to concisely identify yourself will help differentiate you from others whether it is in writing (such as your resume) or verbally (during an interview). Assignment Details: ☐Write your introductory email using no more than 350 words. Remember to keep your style and tone appropriate for addressing a professor. Ensure your email has both an introductory and a closing paragraph. Write clear topic sentences for each paragraph and include supporting detail for each paragraph. Include sections on interests, skills and values. Feel free to be creative. Use plain language and avoid jargon. Proofread your first draft for grammar and spelling. ☐ Edit for clarity and brevity (e.g. paragraphs should not be longer than 100 words; sentences should be concise). ☐Your "email" should include the to/from/subject line section (example below): 0 To: Receiver's name (receiver's email address) From: Sender's name (sender's email address) Subject Line: * This is a good place to grab your audience's attention Your "email" should also include your email signature at the bottom of your message (example below): Student's first and last name Email: student@suffolk.edu Phone: 123-456-7890 Post your "email" to Assignment #1 in Blackboard (do not actually email it to me) before class starts AND bring hard copy to class. Hand in your rough draft with the hard copy that you bring to class (there is no need to post your rough draft to Blackboard). Your assignment will be graded on 1) Organization 2) Grammar and Style 3) Content Assignment Notes: What are your interests? Reflecting on all the activities you have participated in, including school, work, volunteering and leisure, will help you gain insight on interests. Asking yourself the following questions will help identify your interests: How do I spend my free time? Why do I spend my free time this way? What does this say about me? What are your skills? There are two types of skills: hard skills and soft (or transferable) skills: Hard skills are easily measured and consist of factual knowledge that is usually learned during formal training or at school. Hard skills include technical expertise, laboratory techniques, computer skills, and languages. Soft skills are somewhat less tangible and can be acquired in various areas of one's life, such as school, work, or extra- curricular activities. These skills, which include your interpersonal and communication capabilities, can be transferred to various work situations. What values are important to you? Values are beliefs we develop early in life that make up our fundamental beliefs about what is right and wrong, good and bad. They are shaped by our family, culture, education, and different socialization processes. Some values are maintained throughout our lives, while others may change and become more or less important over time. There are countless values. Sometimes we take our values so much for granted that we are not even aware of them, and mistakenly assume that others hold the same values we do. It is important to become aware of one's values and seek environments that are compatible with them. Take the time to consider and list what is most important to you both personally and professionally.
