INTRODUCTION

This Design Studio Session must commenced in the Design Studio Session, completed in your own time and presented for inspection at the following Design Studio Session.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

A knowledge and understanding of:

how to undertake simple structural modelling of a real situation;

how to combine the loadings with safety factors to generated the worst conditions;

how to calculate design stresses and forces from factored loadings.

INFORMATION

You have been supplied with photographs of a structure. The photos show an emergency staircase on a building. You will need to inspect the photos in order to generate information on geometry, materials and section sizes $-$ it may be helpful for you to annotate a sketch elevation and cross section. The information will not be given to you $-$ you are the engineer $-$ make appropriate judgements.
