Homework 12.2: Material Balance
Task 1(of 2)
A company needs to increase the concentration of solution A such that the original solution goes
from 10%A to a final solution of 30%A. This will be done by evaporating B. The concentrated
solution (solution with 30%A) sells for $100L but removing B costs $17L. If the company has
1,000L of the dilute solution, what is the final volume of the concentrated solution, and how
much profit does the company make selling it?

Task 2(of 2)
A and B are fed into a reactor to produce C using the chemical formula below.
2A+3B2C
This means that 2mol of A and 3mol of B react together to make 2mol of C. This reaction is
only 60% efficient (i.e. if you add 10mol of A, only 6mol will turn into C).
The inlet feed (M1) has only A and B and has a ratio of 3mol of B for every 2mol of A. After
the reaction, the product is fed to a distillation column to try and remove as much A and B as
possible. If the distillation column sends out 100molh of C which is 96% of the total amount in
M3(the remainder being 2% of A and 2% of B), find the flow rates of M1,M2, and M4 as well as
the concentration of A,B, and C in each flow. M4 contains no C.
