Please respond to the following topic in your third formal essay for the course:

Create an essay that argues for a specific change or cluster of changes to a situation that is of genuine interest to you and/or to people in a community, group or organization to which you belong. Be sure to choose a manageable topic, one that is somehow "localized" or otherwise focused so that you can do a thorough job of making your case within the time and space limitations at hand. Very "big" or broad topicsparticularly common topics, such as the death penalty, abortion, gun control, etc.are not appropriate for this essay. Draw upon 4-6 credible sources as you make your argument, including at least one article from a scholarly journal. Your outside research will help you understand why the change you are calling for has not yet occurred, and it should help you persuade your audience to make or at least move toward that change.

Concerning your audience:

As in the case of your last formal essay, you will choose your own, specific primary audience. For this paper, you will also conduct research about the audience itself, so that you can make the best possible choices about what to say in your paper, and how to say it. Your audience-related research should give you a strong sense of where your audience currently stands in regard to your topic, and why. It should also clarify how much power, and what types of power, the audience has in regard to the issues at hand. Of course, the more you understand your audience's thoughts and feelings about those issues the more effective you will be in choosing your evidence, your rhetorical strategies, etc. Although it is entirely possible that you will not cite your audience-related research materials in your actual paper, doing the research and having a strong sense of your audience will be crucial to your success in preparing and making your case.
