ENGL 107
Digital Storytelling Assignment (20% of final grade)
Objectives
The goals of this assignment are:
To reflect on how a reading pertains to our life and/or to our community
To interpret and analyze a reading
To communicate clearly and effectively
To explore using digital technology as a communication tool
Format
According to Athabasca Universitys online E-Lab, digital storytelling is a short story created by
combining a recorded narrative with images (still or moving), and music or other sounds.
Create a 3-5 minute digital story that addresses how one of the readings impacts you as a person
and/or to your community.
If, at any point during the assignment, information is borrowed from an outside source (i.e.
internet), make sure to reference it using MLA format. Ideally, avoid using other sources for this
assignment. Try to focus on your own understanding.
The assignment should include:
Both audio and visuals (i.e. filming yourself and your surroundings, recording a
PowerPoint presentation, narrating a slideshow)
Your own voice (i.e.I) and personality
A well-organized structure (either beginning/middle/end or
introduction/thesis/support/conclusion) with specific examples
Evidence of planning beforehand
An in-depth analysis describing which aspects of the reading relate to your life
and how/why the reading affects you and/or your community
Tips
If technology is a barrier, let me know, and I can explain some ways to add audio/video
Read the Digital Storytelling How-to Guide and Steps for Digital Storytelling posted
in Moodle under the Assignments tab
Start by thinking of some moments in a reading that you can relate to; then think about
why they matter and whether you can make any connections between these moments
Try to capture the themes, address any questions you have about the reading, and connect
the reading to your own surroundings
This assignment does not require videography or video-editing skills; you can film with
your phone or screen-capture a PowerPoint presentation
Choose a different reading than the one you chose for the oral excerpt
Make sure to clearly explain which reading you chose
Show insight and creativity
