ENGR 220: Statics
Problem #6(15 points)
A heavy door is used to seal a furnace. The door's weight of 100 lb acts through point G located at the center of the 18 in by 18 in door. The door is rigidly attached to two L-shaped brackets that extend to C and D . Bearings at C and D connect the door to a vertical rod.
Assume there is no axial thrust load supported at either bearing. Since the bearings do not support any vertical load, a cable AB is attached to the corner of the door at A to support the weight.
(5) a) Draw and name all the forces acting on the door/bracket assembly. (You may draw on the figure provided)
(10) b) Determine the tension in cable AB to hold the door in equilibrium. (Note: Think carefully about which equations you want to write to avoid making this problem unnecessarily long.)
Look carefully at the figure. Cable AB is NOT in the xz plane.
