Entrepreneurial decisionmaking exists on a continuum, ranging from a purely intuitive approach on one end
to a purely analytical approach on the other Klein; Simon, The normative framework of
entrepreneurial decisionmaking is characterised by a logical reasoned or analytical approach, while the
descriptive framework explores the affective, intuitive and instinctive domains that often influence decisions
in practice Dane & Pratt, ; Gigerenzer, This spectrum underscores the importance of
understanding how intuition and analysis can coexist in effective decisionmaking.
The following remarks were made by Jeff Bezos, one of the most successful entrepreneurs the world over,
on September at the Economic Club of Washington:
All of my best decisions in business and in life have been made with heart, intuition, gut
not analysis. When you can make a decision with analysis, you should do so but it turns out
in life that your most important decisions are always made with instinct, intuition, taste,
heart.
Similarly, in Walter Isaacsons worldwide bestselling biography of Apple cofounder Steve Jobs, Steve
Jobs is quoted as having said the following during his Commencement address to Standford University:
Intuition is a very powerful thing, more powerful than intellect.
These and other similar anecdotal insights emphasising the importance of intuition and emotional intelligence
in decisionmaking over purely analytical approaches are not only intriguing but also compelling.
