6. Feedback loops On earth, natural systems constantly respond to change through feedback loops. More specifically, changes made to the inputs of matter and energy of a system can affect how they behave and flow within the system. This system-wide response can then either amplify the initial changes made to the system or dampen, or correct, the initial changes made to the system. Examples of feedback loops are prevalent in a variety of environmental issues. One common example is the melting of sea ice due to increased atmospheric temperatures on earth. auf Human activities have increased atmospheric temperatures on earth. More heat results in even higher atmospheric temperatures. Ice melts from increased atmospheric temperatures. As reflective ice disappears, darker ocean water absorbs more heat. P As seen in the illustration, human activities, such as the burning of fossil fuels, initially increase atmospheric temperatures on earth (1). As a result, arctic ice begins to melt (2). As the white, reflective ice disappears over time, more of the darker ocean water is exposed, absorbing more and more heat (3). This further increases, or amplifies, atmospheric temperatures (4). Thus, after just one cycle of this feedback loop, the change initially made on this system ultimately temperatures change further in the same direction. because atmospheric 6.
