For this mini-essay, I would like you to tell a story about your hometown (or where you live now or lived in the past) that is emblematic of the place. Think about annual events, like the county fair or a 5K race, or political scandals, or a particularly spectacular crime. The purpose of the story is to reveal something about the values and attitudes of your city or town. You should connect this story to something you read in Berendt's book, but do not worry about making an exact comparison. Every place is different, after all, and many places in the South are fascinating because of their strangeness and uniqueness. Every mini essay should have a title that indicates your subject and argument, a thesis paragraph that clearly states your intention for the paper, body paragraphs that include at least one direct quotation (properly cited) from Berendt's work, a concluding paragraph that looks outside the immediate discussion of the text and/or your life, and a works cited page (in MLA style).
