Eric Loo has had a long career at Widget, Inc., the most successful company in all of Malaysia. Company founder Kiranjit Kaur had brought the new industry to the slowly developing democracy, in hopes of fostering prosperity. Most of Malaysia's economic growth was driven by export particularly to China. Widget had brought much needed cash into the country and helped to finance education and agricultural initiatives. The company's emphasis on values and its record for excellent performance had made it a prime target for investors even a decade after Kaur's death.

The recent wave of global investors had made it possible for much$-$needed expansion in some departments. Loo's boss requested that he supervise the hiring If a new team member, with one stipulation: $"$Do you know any Chinese executives who would be interested in the job? We really need to make an effort to diversify the team, and I want our trading partners and investors to see how global we are?" Loo was surprised, but he began interviewing candidates for the job.

Many of them were not Malaysians.

After two weeks of interviews, Loo concluded that two people were the best candidates for the job, and both were Malaysian. Loo explained his recommendation to his boss, carefully presenting each candidate's background and abilities. Irritated, his boss said, "Wasn't I clear when I said we need a Chinese person in the group? We can't afford to be an all$-$Malaysian department. Besides, if it turns out the Chinese guy can't do the job we'll just move him to another department. What's the big deal?"
