Essay 1: Inquiry Essay EH 101-151 Due Dates: Topic Approval: Thursday, September 19th at 11:59 p.m. First Draft Due: Friday, September 27th at 11:59 p.m. Peer Review: Tuesday, October 1st in class Final Submission: Friday, October 4th at 11:59 p.m. Length: 3-4 pages (approximately 950-1000 words) Value: 100 pts (15% of your final grade) Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to choose a topic you know enough information to inquire into the issue that you chose. Keep in mind that to inquire is not to create an argument; instead, it is to explore the complexities of an issue and explain each side to your audience. Do not solely explain one side of the topic without addressing the other. * You should be explaining each side of the topic without any biases. This means to make sure none of your personal opinions or ideas leak into your statements * Topics: I have limited your topic selection to the following: social media, family, education, uniforms, and art. After choosing a topic, you should begin by formulating a question. For example: Should children have access to social media? Are morning classes more beneficial than afternoon classes? Should we separate the art from the artist? Audience: Your audience is your classmates. So when you are writing your paper, make sure to convey the information you found in a way for your audience to fully understand what you are talking about. This does not mean to speak in an informal way, but instead means to utilize terms that are easy for your intended audience to understand. Do not use first person until part III of your paper. Format: This paper needs to be in proper MLA format. The header needs to follow the header provided in the syllabus. You will need to have a Works Cited page if you use any outside research in this paper. Arrangement: Your essay will have three parts. Part I: Introduce the topic/issue at hand, provide a brief description of the topic in order for the audience to understand certain background information. Identify the specific issue and major positions of said issue (again, without bias). Think back to the summary assignment we did, make sure to provide an adequate summary that does not take up a majority of this part, ThenK MacBook Air esc F1 F2 20 F3 000 F4 F5 F6 F7 F8 a # $ % A 2 3 4 5 8 Q W tab create a thesis statement that showcases how you will further look into the argument and its sides in your paper. Part II: In this part, you will dedicate at least two paragraphs to each major position of the issue. In other words, there should be at least four paragraphs in this section. This dedication will expand deeper into the issue at hand and further explain why this issue exists. It would be in your best interest to think of a couple reasons for each position and focus on those reasons in your paragraphs (without any biases). Part III: This is where you will finally introduce your opinions into the paper. Before you state your opinion, you shall need to compare the two perspectives to each other. This will allow you to remind the audience of the facts you presented before you state your own opinion on the issue. You shall be evaluating the sides you presented and then come to a conclusion based on your own evidence you presented. Make sure to justify your decision based on the evidence you present, not your own personal experience. Assessment: Your essay will be evaluated based on the Shared Criteria for Evaluating Writing which can be found in Section 5 of Resources for Composition at the University of South Alabama on Achieve
