A1*- Stripping & Excavation
Due - week 3(see Bb for due date/time)
Instructions:
Each student is to individually complete manual
calculations. Include all manual calculations/sketches
(images saved as PNG). Use filename:
AEC202- A1- calculation - student name -
page1.png (each student to submit)
As a group, setup one Excel spreadsheet with new tab

Estimate Information:
Using the House Plans provided and given that:
Dimension B (from lecture notes) between outside of
footing and bottom of the excavation slope is 12".
Soil slope for the house and garage excavations is 2:1.
Topsoil on the side is assumed to be 8'' thick.
One dump truck carries 12yd3 of topsoil.
Topsoil to be stripped and stockpiled on site for later use.
New material will be brought in for backfilling around the
foundation to use compaction faction 1.4
Excavated materials that need to be trucked away will use
a compaction factor of 1.2
Topsoil required around the building's perimeter will use a
compaction factor of 1.3
Calculate the following:
PERIMETER AND AREA: Determine the perimeter and
area of the building including the garage. Use outside wall
dimensions).
STRIPPED AND STOCKPILED: Determine cubic yards of
topsoil to be stripped and stockpiled. (Topsoil must be
removed to allow construction of the house, sidewalks, and
driveway.)
EXCAVATED SOIL: Determine cubic yards of soil
excavated for the foundation and basement construction.
Don't forget the swell factor.
TRUCKLOADS: Determine the number of truckloads
required to remove the soil excavated for foundation and
basement construction.
BACKFILL: Determine the cubic yards of new backilling
that would be required to be brought to the site around the
perimeter of the building.
TRUCKLOADS: Determine the number of trucks of new
topsoil required.
