Luis was your typical 14 yo boy. He was tall, and thin but muscular. He was of mixed nationalities (Caucasian and Hispanic). Luis came from a lower, one income family in what's referred to as the projects. His parents divorced at a young age, and his father didn't remain in his life. His mother worked hard to provide for them. He was a straight A student, who worked odd jobs after school and volunteered with his mother and sisters at the food pantry, which they themselves utilized. One day Luis's Mother was offered a position in a higher paying job. Soon they were able to save up and move to a new neighborhood, but this meant Luis would be starting a new school in the fall with none of this old friends. Luis spent the summer hanging out with his neighbor and new best friend Chris. Chris was an outwardly homosexual African American boy in Chris's grade. As their friendship grew, Luis noticed he had an attraction to Chris. Before the summer was over Luis and Chris were dating in secret. Once the school year started, Luis began to get bullied for being friends with Chris. Desperate to be popular, Luis started to purposely avoid Chris at school and even occasionally secretly joined in making fun of him. He felt guilty, but before he knew it, he was popular. He was fashionable, the class clown, the center of attention, always doing the bare minimum just to get by and still take part in activities. Though it was emotionally hard on him living a double life, where he had to tolerate and at times take part in the teasing of someone he loved. One day while Chris was grabbing something from the locker room, he overheard the popular crowd making fun of him. This was nothing new, except this time he was listening to it come from Luis, the man who just hours before were making plans with him for their date that night. He heard him say "gays like him have no place in the world and should kill themselves". Chris began to question the sincerity of everyone in his life and wonder how he could trust people. Luis got to Chris's house that night for their date to find he had left a note and had overdosed on pills. This was when Luis learned that Chris had heard what he said in the locker room. Luis had a hard time dealing with the guilt and pain and spiraled downhill turning to drinking and drugs to try and numb the pain. One day while feeling at his lowest he was researching help hotlines and came across the LGBTQIA+ youth hotline which helped him work on accepting himself and turning his life around.
