Every day, people develop relationships with those who differ from them in terms of age, ethnicity, religion, class or sexual orientation. There are two famous adages that aid in understanding this topic: "Birds of a feather flock together" and "Opposites attract."

Which adage applies to your communication in intercultural relationships?

Who we are attracted to is largely determined by cultural contexts. Notions of attractiveness are defined for us and reinforced by what we see on TV and film and in other media. The standard of beauty for American women seems to be white and blonde, and at least one study found that, while only 5% of the white population in the US is naturally blonde, 30% of female senators, and 50% of CEOs are "blonde" (Zetlin, 2019).
