Every day, people face problems at home, work, school, or in their community that they must solve. Think about your life from the past 2 weeks, when something did not work out the way you intended, such as your car breaking down, you running out of milk, or facing a scheduling conflict. A lot of them need you to use math to help solve the problem. Share at least 1 problem that you encountered recently, and answer the following questions in your main post: What was the problem, and why it was difficult for you? How did you use math in trying to solve the problem, and what was the outcome? How would you approach in the problem differently next time? EXAMPLE One problem that I faced over the last two weeks was deciding what snacks to bring to my daughter's school for snack time. This week was my week, and I am really trying to bring healthy snacks to school. This is difficult because I did not have time to go to the store to buy the healthy snacks in bulk like I typically do so I had to decide if I would get a reasonable price at another store. I decided to follow the Polya problem solving plan as described in the Intellipath lessons for unit 1 and 2. Phase 1 is understanding the problem. The problem is I was not sure if the price at the local store for the smaller packs was comparable to the price at the Bulk store. The second phase is to devise a plan. My plan was to determine the unit price at each store to determine the better price and look for coupons to make it more reasonable. Phase 3 was to carry out the plan. I went to the store and found that a 12 pack of the snack was $16.99. I had a coupon for $2 off. To determine the unit price, I subtracted 2 from $16.99 which gave me $14.99. Then I divided the price by 12, so $14.99/12 = $1.25. The price at the local store was $1.25. I typically buy a 20 pack for $27 at the bulk store. The unit price is $27/20=$1.35. At the bulk store the price is $1.35. I decided to make the purchase at the local store. Phase 4 is looking back. Next time, I know that if I have a coupon, I can get my healthy snacks at my local store at a better price
