Maya was raised in a home where she has been exposed to three languages, Italian, English, and Spanish since birth. Her mother is an Italian born native speaker and her father is a native born English speaking monolingual. Maya is also cared for by her nanny who is a native Spanish- speaker. Maya's three caregivers each speak to her in their native language. Maya's mother is a doctor of philosophy and teacher at a four-year university and her father works at a museum. Maya is an extraverted child who has many friends and loves to chat. Her mother reports that at the age of four, Maya's strongest language was Italian, followed by Spanish, and then English. Maya attended an English-language preschool from four to five years of age. Her parents then enrolled her in a two-way, dual-language (Italian/ English) immersion program in Glendale, California. This recording was taken seven months after she started to attend this new program in kindergarten. This means that at the time of the recording her language exposure patterns had changed, with Italian representing 45% of the languages heard, English 35%, and Spanish 20%, possibly making English stronger than Spanish.
