Exercise - Promoting Team Development

The most common model of team development suggests that teams go through reasonably predictable stages of development as follows - forming, storming, norming, performing and adjourning. Research suggests that teams that do not storm sufficiently and effectively, do not establish influential and useful norms that support superior performance. You have recently been appointed as a manager of a team that behaves in a very nice and polite manner, and consistently under performs. Your assessment of the situation is that the team has not sufficiently completed the stage of storming and has now developed operating norms that support the avoidance of anything that may produce conflict, including things that may lead to more effectively performance. You have decided to intervene in the functioning of the team to try and encourage the completion of the storming stage, what are you going to do?
