Exercises on computer OS.

Assuming you have your computer with a number of hardware components, you need a software part

(programs) to make your computer work.

(1) What programs do you need to be able to control your computer hard drive?

(2) What programs does your computer have to have to be able to help you create a file, store it on

a hard drive, allow you to read your file, share it with your friend and delete it when you no

longer need the file?

(3) Explain how your computer makes your life easier as you do not have to deal with every single

piece of hardware. For example, you want your computer tell you how much disk space is still

available for you to use.

(4) Explain how an OS can help you search for a file on your computer. For example, you want to

look for a file called pastexamquestion you downloaded a week ago.

(5) Explain how you can change your password (with the password program /usr/bin/passwd or in

another directory you can search for it: which passwd) when you do not have privilege to

open the file in which your password is stored (/etc/shadow)
