EXPERIMENT 3: CHI SQUARE TEST

Data Tables

Purpose(What question is this experiment designed to answer?):

The purpose of this experiment is to see if we can use a coin to discoverwhetheror notgene inheritance has a pattern or not

Hypothesis(Based on whatyou'velearned in the pre-lab materials, write and If/Then statementregardingthe outcome of this experiment.):

Myhypothesiswould be for this experiment thatthere+will be a 50/50 chance or close to it that the coin will land on heads and tails with flipping the coin 100 times.

Claim(What are the results of your experiment?):

The results of my experiment in flipping the coin 100 times I expected a 50/50 outcome and I got 48 flips landed on heads and 52flips landed on tails.

Evidence(What data did you collect that supports your claim? Explain the meaning behind the data and the calculations.):

The evidence shown tosupportmy claim is in the abovechartwhich shows although the coin was flipped 100 times and the expected outcome was not myresult,I got48 on heads and 52 on tails. This proves that tailswereflipped four more times than headswereflipped.

Post-Lab Questions

  1. Use the equation below to calculate your Chi-squared value. Record the value here.

  1. Calculate your degrees of freedom (df) value. Degrees of freedom equals the number of categories minus one.
  2. Use an outside resource (a website, a textbook, etc) to find a Chi-square table of critical values. What is the p-value for your test?
  3. Based on your p-value, are your results due to random chance?
  4. Describe one genetics scenario where a Chi-square test would be used and what it wouldindicate.
