Q.1.
A sieve analysis of a soil sample was carried out in the laboratory and the results are given in th Table 2 below. Also the natural water content, LL and PL are given in the Table 3.
Answer the following according to your group (see Table 1 below
(a) Plot the grain size distribution
(b) Make a histogram plot (frequency plot) for only one soil as shown in the list below. Use suitable intervals.
(c) Find the percentage of gravel, sand and fines according to USCS.
(d) Find the percentage of gravel, sand and fines according to AASHTO. How this compares to (c)?
(e) Calculate Cu and Cc(when applicable)
(f) What is the effective diameter?
(g) Determine the plasticity index (PI) and Liquidity index (LI) for each soil (when applicable) and comment on the state of the natural soils (i.e., solid, liquid ...etc.).
(h) Classify the soils according to the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS). Give the soil name and symbol.
(i) Classify the soils according to AASHTO classification system. Give the soil name and symbol. Determine the group index (GI) for each soil. Rate the soils from the best to worst for use as a pavement material.
(j) Comment on your results in (a to h).
(k) If you have to select a soil for a roadway that requires good drainage qualities, what soil type (s)(from the 4 soils you analyzed above) would you select and why?
