In Sweden, the teachers at Anderstorp's high school in Skellefte each year spend 17,280 hours registering students attendance. Swedish legislation states that schools must report daily to custodians how each individual lessons attendance looks. The school authority thus had decided to see whether facial-recognition technology could speed up the process. In collaboration with a private IT software and service company, a class of 22 students was selected as a test group. The school secured parents' and students consent to monitor the students. The school authority provided resources to aid in the processing and storage of student data. Cameras and sensors were placed in the entrance of the classroom. At the first step, clear images of students faces must be recorded and stored in a database to provide a baseline for the facial recognition algorithms. The algorithms need the images of students full faces to establish their identities. Face coverings or masks thus need to be removed. When students entered the test classroom, new images of their face would be captured and compared against the baseline images held in the database. For three weeks the experiment was conducted to collect students facial images and other biometric data.
