Explain this statement:
1.0 Introduction.
1.1 Statement of the Problem.
Technology has simplified the exchange of messages between two or more parties by providing various platforms such as E-mail. However, with the increased usage of E-mail as a mode of communication, there has been an increasing worry about the use of E-mail for illegal or illegitimate reasons. For example, there has been an increase in the number of Unsolicited Commercial E-mails (UCE) and the threats, computer viruses, and hoaxes sent to people worldwide. Unfortunately, E-mail has played a significant role in encouraging serious crimes such as drug trafficking since it can be used to send messages anonymously.
Much work has been done to curb the vices associated with E-mail by leading corporations such as Google. For example, creating a spam folder in E-mail has protected people from the reach of notorious spammers who use E-Mail to lure innocent people. However, the dynamic nature of technology has enabled people with bad intentions, such as spammers and fraudsters, to mask their identity when sending malicious E-mails. In other instances, the author's details of the Email that reaches its destination do not reflect the original identity of the individual who sent the Email.
This implies that only the email body, text, and structure are available for forensic analysis. Therefore, this research project aims to investigate whether Email texts can be forensically analysed to determine the authorship of spam and anonymous emails.
