Understandably, that would still affect you today.' INAPPROPRIATE: 'That was a long time ago. It's time to get over it.' 

2. A person describes the emotional abuse inflicted upon them by their ex-wife. APPROPRIATE: 'That sounds really awful. I am so glad you decided to leave her and find a healthier environment to live in.' INAPPROPRIATE: 'Well, how much harm could a woman really cause. I mean, it's not like she was hitting you.' 

3. A person describes an incident when they were recently sexually assaulted and asks for advice, but you feel they need counselling from a more qualified and knowledgeable mental health professional. APPROPRIATE: 'This is a hard time for you, and I thank you for sharing this with me. Sounds like you have a lot to talk about, and I'm wondering if counselling is an option for you right now. I know someone nice and experienced, and I think they could really help you.
