- When looking at this organization, identify three communication behaviors or processes that you felt were positive and negative aspects of communication. Discuss why this was positive and/or negative. (Your workplace may have been completely positive, a mix of both good and bad, or completely negative. We can learn a lot from either perspective!)
When reviewing an organization and three communication behaviors or processes it immediately reminded me of my current workplace. The Mill Saloon is a restaurant in my hometown that I have worked at for about two years. To start with more negative aspects, a lot of the issues in the workplace are due to gossip and exclusion. A big lack of direct communication and friendship between workers which ultimately leads to poor clarity. You can actively notice the workers not working together and most of the time being confused, there aremenu changes, draft changes, protocol changes that aren't addressed to everyone in the workplace. However, when working in a restaurant the team does a well job at being adaptive and finding solutions when needed which can be beneficial in a restaurant.
- What management style do you feel best represents this organization, and why? Make sure to connect to the reading to illustrate your connections.
When discussing a management style for my place of work I have determined it is a contingency style. In Chapter one and the lecture it had explained that contingency style is a combination where some task are followed a certain way while other may be open ended. With waitressing it can be very broad and have many different situations while being fast paced but have many task that are done everyday and a certain way. In the textbook it explained that "During a crisis, a manager may yell at employees and tell them exactly what to do because two-way communication might waste time. But during more tranquil times, discussions between the manager and employees may be appropriate" (Veltsos & Hynes, 2024). This is something that will often happen about my workplace and often cause tension between each other due to the high volume of people, orders, and tasks that need to be done. The only way this is addressed after the fact is through a group text from the manager.
- What type of organization do you feel you would be most successful in, and why? (Possible prompts- remember to connect to Chapter 1 content! When you think about your ideal workplace, what comes to mind? What kind of environment do you want to work in? What is necessary for you to be happy at work? Why are these important to you?)
Although I do well a specific tasks and ways to do them the style I chose was empowerment. This involves changing things and gaining from others experience as well as being model from the top down. In Chapter one of the textbook, it explained that "In the 1990s, we began to see power being given to others in the organization so they could act more freely to accomplish jobs"(Veltsos & Hynes, 2024). Which would allow for more freedom and feeling more apart of the team. However the main thing I look for in a job is respect and common ground. If no matter the topic I can always leave feeling like someone was helping, teaching, or explaining something in a conversation about work is what makes a good work relationship. It is nice when you can become friends with them as well but ultimately respect. Another reason i chose this one was because it is focused on the outlook of the higher ups that create environment.
