Figure 1 below shows a partial isometric view of an edge column in three storey shopping mall building, in which the horizontal forces due to the wind are resisted by shear walls and stairwells. The height of the column from the top face of the foundation to the top face of the first floor beam is 7.5 m, while that between the successive floors is 7.0 m. All the columns are of 300 mm x 400 mm cross-section and positioned as shown in the figure. The main beam A with a cross-section of 300 mm x 600 mm and a span of 7.0 m is framed into the column from one side only, while the secondary beam B which has the same cross- section as beam A but with a span of 4.5 m is framed from either side of the column along the edge of the building. The connection between the bottom end of the lower column and the foundation is designed to carry the bending moments. From the loading analysis, the first lift of the column (from the foundation to the first floor) carries an ultimate axial load of 2500 kN, with the ultimate bending moment of 52 kNm and 26 kNm at the top and bottom ends respectively, produced by the load on beam A. The moments in the column resulting from the difference in end moments in the secondary beam B are small and may be neglected. Use Grade C35/45 for concrete and Grade 500 for steel reinforcements. b) 2nd Floor Analyse the column to obtain the effective height of the second lift of the column (1st floor to 2nd floor) 1st Floor Classify the type of the column 7000 7500 Ground Floor Foundation Beam A 300 x 600 Length: 7000 Beam B 250 x 500 Length: 4500 All the units are in millimetre (mm) Figure 1 52 KNM 26 KNM Figure 1 below shows a partial isometric view of an edge column in three storey shopping mall building, in which the horizontal forces due to the wind are resisted by shear walls and stairwells.
