This is an open-book assignment. You may use course resources as a reference and a guide. However, your answers MUST BE YOUR OWN. Copied answers will result in a grade of ZERO (0) for this assignment and may result in additional administrative action. If you are unsure if a particular use of a resource may be considered copying, dont hesitate to call on me for clarification. THIS IS NOT A GROUP ASSIGNMENT.

THE ASSIGNMENT

Part A

In simple point-form, describe a work, school, or personal process or activity that you are familiar with. Include all of the average or normal decisions that would have to be made, and the conditions that may result in alternative paths or actions being taken throughout the process. Include variables that you would likely encounter. Dont include variables that never happen. Here are some examples of processes you may use if youre having trouble coming up with an idea: a night out with friends; running a process at work (like taking a customer order or building a marketing plan); preparing for a trip out of town; making a special meal for family or friends; applying for a job; or building a model airplane.

Part B

Using your written description as your guide, create a BPMN diagram of your process as described. Be sure to use the appropriate grammar for your diagram. Your diagram MUST successfully/logically include the following:

  1. Between 25 and 30 nodes (activities, gateways, and events)
  2. At least one (1) collapsed sub-process (no need to elaborate the sub-process details)
  3. At least three (3) of the four (4) following gateways: XOR, AND, OR, and EVENT-BASED
  4. At least one of EACH of the following events: conditional, timer, and attached (interrupting or non-interrupting) events
  5. At least two (2) pools (1 collapsed)
  6. At least one (1) call sub-process
  7. At least one (1) multi-instance sub-process or collapsed pool
  8. At least one (1) communication flow
  9. At least three (3) internal actors or departments
  10. A cancellation process that would allow you to cancel the entire process. (Hint: Theres an example of a simple cancellation process in the class PowerPoint presentations that you can use. Think catching message event and a terminate event.)

BONUS POINTS (5 points)

If you can successfully incorporate a properly executed TRANSACTION expanded sub-process with internal error event(s), compensation event(s), and/or cancellation event(s) as well as an attached interrupting cancellation event, you will receive 5 bonus points added to your final assignment grade to a maximum of 20/20 (100%) on the assignment. Only properly executed BONUS attempts will receive points. No partial BONUS points will be awarded.

Note: You may alter your Part A description to match your BPMN diagram as you work through Part B. Be sure that the written description matches your BPMN diagram. You will be graded based on your adherence to BPMN logic, semantics, and grammar as well as the fidelity between your written description and your BPMN diagram. Its OK if your chosen process is not entirely faithful to reality and its OK if you need to modify your process to make sure you cover all of the assignment requirements. Remember, simple is better.
