This romantic vision of warfare quickly became a brutal and hellish reality that was WWI. Nations from around the world supplied not only soldiers, but recruited their civilians to support the war by making weapons and supplies and by rationing food and materials, making WWI the greatest total war (a conflict in which participating countries devote all of their resources to the war effort) the world had ever seen, As the conflict touched nearly every continent on Earth, millions of civilians were killed or injured alongside the millions of soldiers. By the time the fighting stopped, the death toll and destruction was enormous. In the end, more than 8.5 million soldiers were killed and 21 million more were wounded. Millions of civilians were also lost duc to starvation, disease, and violence. Europe essentially lost an entire generation of people to the Great War.
