You and your team are employees at Coach 4 Life, a consulting company in downtown Toronto. Coach 4 Life’s specialty is providing “soft skills” training to corporate clients. A new  client, Royal Bank of Canada, has just hired Coach 4 Life to develop a series  of training seminars for its employees on various soft skills competencies.

Royal Bank of Canada has  requested that each 25-30 minute employee seminar include:

• An overview of one particular skill/competency (see list below) including some theory/concepts that underpin it. Here are the skills/competencies:
• A set of scripted before-and-after videos that demonstrate poor and effective use of skill/competency in question (scenario can not come from our cases***)
• An interactive component that gets employees involved (e.g. via quizzing, volunteering, quick teamwork activities, etc.)
• A professional one-page handout summarizing the importance of the skill/competency and how to demonstrate it in common workplace situations

The team will be graded  holistically (i.e. same grade for each member), and your professor will expect a cover note explaining how the work on the presentation was divided up as well  as a completed team peer assessment form from each member.

“I just got my 500 ^th friend on Facebook,” Javier  said to his classmate, Christine.

Christine looked up from texting her friend, Laura, who sat  on the other side of the room. “I have 150 friends,” Christine replied, “but I  only talk to about 20 of them.”

“What do you think of my Facebook page?” Javier asked,  showing his tablet to Laura.

1. Is Javier  and Christine and Laura’s idea of friendship typical or atypical, when you think of your own life? 

2. What are a  few specific challenges you’ve experienced using mediated communication to maintain friendships and relationships?

3. Using Google or the library’s databases, find a strong resource (e.g. newspaper/magazine article or peer-reviewed journal)—one that supports the idea that mediated communication has enhanced interpersonal communication and another that refutes it. Using the articles, say something about the following premise: “Mediated communication  (i.e. social media) has, for the most  part, had a positive effect on relationships in our culture.”
