FLOW OVER A BUMP
LABORATORY REPORT -2
Date:
\table[[Student ID:,Name-Surname:],[,]]
Aim
The aim of this experiment is observing flow behaviour over a bump placed in an open channel at the laboratory and measuring its main characteristics.
2. Theoretical Information
In this par% you need to give theoretical information on definition of flow over a bump and its characteristics and related equations for different flow regimes to be observed.
3. Experimental System
Experiments are executed in a recirculating laboratory flume that is 3m in length. Clear glass sides of the flume give visibility of the working section. A jacking system permits the slope of the channel bed to be adjusted between -1% and +3%.
At the left hand side of the flume, water flows into a storage tank and circulates to upstream side via a pump included at the system.
Water level in the flume is measured by the help of level gauges. Flowrate is measured via a flow meter.
4. Experimental Procedure
a) Set the bottom slope as 0 by checking the level.
b) Insert a round corner broad crested weir into the flume at a certain location. Before placement, measure its height (P), length (Lw) and width (B).
c) Turn on the pump and set the flowrate in the flume at a certain value and note that value. Take the discharge readings only when flow is steady after waiting for some time.
d) Note the depth of flow at upstream side of bump, over the bump and downstream side of bump at certain point.
e) Define the type of flow at every section you have measured the flow depths at upstream, downstream and on top of the weir. Note the location of your measurement in the flume. Take some pictures to be used in Results & Discussion part.
f) For upstream and downstream regions, prove your definitions for flow types by calculating the Froude
numbers.
5. Measurements and Calculations
In this part, you need to make required calculations and fill out the tables below (Table 1 & 2)
