Food Science Writing Assignment

Objective: Use the peer-reviewed scientific information recently published on sustainability and food systems to write an essay that addresses the three questions below. As part of the essay, reflect on your search, the information gathered, and how you will use this current and developing information in your everyday life.

Instructions: Search for peer-reviewed articles on sustainability and food systems [agriculture, food production, food processing, distribution, consumption, disposal of food products, food safety, etc.]. The articles must be related to sustainability in any area of food systems. Choose one area within food systems to focus your essay OR you may also choose a particular food item that may be sustainable. The essay will also need to address the questions below using. You must include at least 3 peer-reviewed journal articles (primary or secondary articles). In your essay, discuss the current state of the science or information available on your chosen topic. Ensure all the articles are chosen fully to support your discussion. Do not use direct quotes from your sources. Please rephrase the information using your own words.

Questions to address:

1. What is sustainability and what does it have to do with food?
2. What is a current problem within our food system?
3. What food or food system process or technique could be used to improve sustainability and why would this be advantageous?

Reflection: Reflect on your research experience and what you learned from this exercise.Did you learn any new information, and will this information change your views, opinions, or purchasing behavior in the future?Are there practices you will keep for the long term beyond the current pandemic?

Other Pertinent Information:

Peer-reviewed articles are required to support the discussions (at least 3 peer-reviewed journal articles) and in-text citations are also required. Please use the AMA reference style.
