For 15 marks Identify 4 issues or problems in the scenario/case "LukeWarm Inc and discuss the HRM challenges they represent. Analyze and explain why you think they are important matters that need to be addressed. Make sure to clearly explain the HR functions (areas) that are involved/impacted. For each of those 4 challenges, discuss what actions, measures or activities you would implement to effectively deal with these problems. Luke Warm Inc You are a recent Okanagan College graduate. Four months ago, you started working for a BC company, Lukewarminc a construction and renovation company. Lukewarminc currently has 20 employees, including 12 laborers who are responsible for on-site work. Although base pay levels in the firm are slightly above average when compared to other similar companies in the immediate area, the owner has chosen to limit employee benefits to those legally required. Employees are dissatisfied because they are not given any voluntar Penefits, and because employee pay is not equitable. Wage rates amongst employees vary widely even with similar jobs. Pay is not the only issue. The production workers are eligible for a $200 draw each month if there are no accidents during the month. Other employees, such as office staff and sales representatives are not eligible for the draw. The owner justifies this by claiming that the health and safety issues are on site, not in the office. In time of high demands, short cuts in are taken that compromise sustainability, and people are stretched to the limit to meet unrealistic deadlines. The manager is clear "We get the job done on time and on budget!" Your official title is Assistant Manager and your job involves some aspects of operations management as well as marketing. You work long hours but find the job to be quite rewarding and have enjoyed the exposure to the real world of business. A week ago, the owner of the Lukewarminc came to you and asked you to also assume responsibility for Human Resources, saying, "I'm not into all that people management stuff but we are expanding. I know we've got to have somebody do it. You can pretty much do what you want when it comes to hiring-the only thing that's important to me is that we don't ever get a union around here hid Here's Yesterday, the owner dropped by your office to tell you that the company was going to need to hire two production people. He said, "Here's a chance for you to use some of that stuff you learned in business school. I've been doing most of the hiring around here but I'm just getting too busy. As I mentioned the other day, the only thing I want is to be sure that we don't get a union around here. Oh, also, the people you hire better be good and my preference is males, it is best for the physical labour on site and it makes things easier for the guys in the teams Here's a tip for getting the right people when you bring someone in for an interview, ask them the usual stuff about qualifications and so on. Then, carefully bring the conversation around to unions. But you've got to be careful don't want the labour board down here bothering us. I usually bring up some labour dispute-you know, the bus strike, teacher's strike, stuff like that. If you are listening carefully, you can find out what the person really think about unions. And, obviously, if you think that they are sympathetic to unions, don't hire them. It's worked for me for more than 25 years. You may as well screen out any female applicants, but I will leave that up to you. Whatever you do, don't mess this up! 1 F T: B 4 Hii III %
