For$$example$,$ the U$.$S$.$ Supreme Court$$held$,$in the $1994$ case of BMW of North America, Inc. v$.$ Gore,$$that a $$2$ million verdict for punitive damages was excessive,$$as$$it was wildly out of proportion to the $$4,000$ granted for compensatory damages.$$Some factors$$the$$Court established as guideline to determine punitive damages to include: the$$degree of reprehensibility;$$the$$ratio$$of punitive$$damages$$to compensatory damages;$$and$$comparison$$to$$other$$similar$$sanctions$$imposed$$in$$comparable$$cases$.$
