Question:
For Part I, you should provide both the broad statement of the issue and the narrow statement of the issue. The broad issue statement is very simple and generic. You are being asked to provide it mostly so that you can see why that should be avoided.
The narrow issue statement will have those same three elements that you were to include in your issue spotting assignment - applicable law, legal question (which is also the broad issue statement), and specific, relevant facts.
- The client is charged with theft. The law and facts are presented below. First draft a broad statement of the issue, then draft a narrow statement of the issue.
Law: Criminal Code § 18-16-401, Theft.
Facts: John was walking home from a movie late one night. The client came up behind John and told John to give the client all his money or the client would “be sorry.” John gave the client his money.
Broad issue statement

Narrow issue statement
- Under Criminal Code § 18-16-401, Theft, can the client be charged for threatening to unlawfully take money from someone else and; can that person sue for robbery?
