For the Signal Coding lab, the key concept to apply is determining how many different elements of information must be encoded. After that has been determined, in a binary numbering scheme how many bits would be required to uniquely assign that number of values represented in binary? For example, with two bits you can encode four values, $00,01,10,$ and $11.$ If you were looking to encode the letters A$,$ B$,$ C$,$ and D you could do that using two bits $(2^2).$
