For this assignment, I decided to get information from two establishments I worked last year. One of the establishments is Rewind by Decades; it's a restaurant/nightlife that prides itself on showing great hospitality and ensuring people have a great experience every time they enter the door. The second establishment is Hertz Rental Cars; it is a rental and sales company driven to be customer focused, cost-efficient, and provide an unforgettable car rental experience for whatever journey you may be on.
Rewind uses the divisional structure based on products. This is a perfect structure to describe them because Rewind is a restaurant; therefore, the establishment is run-off products (food & alcohol) being sold. On the other hand, Hertz Rental Cars uses a flat organizational structure; at Hertz, they have a mixture of specialists and generalists that are allowed to make crucial decisions on their own.
The Rewind management structure is hierarchy oriented; because the establishment is a restaurant, and that restaurant has an owner. The owner wants their restaurant to be run a certain way, and the managers are in place to ensure that happens. Therefore the employees had to do everything exactly as they were told. Hertz Rental Cars' management structure was clan oriented; Hertz made everyone feel like they were a part of a family. We worked together and built people up to ensure success within the company.
Something interesting about my findings is the general manager from Rewind chose hierarchy oriented. Although I know the definition of hierarchy oriented structure now, when I was working there, it never felt like a hierarchy kind of environment. The manager would have meetings and give us (the staff) the opportunity to provide input on how things should be run. I was not surprised by any of the Hertz information. They pride themselves on making their customers happy, and their employees feel as though they're making a difference in the company no matter what level they're on.
While reviewing all this information, I kept referring back to the "Types of Organizational Design" chart in our readings. I noticed that Rewind falls under the characteristic of "complexity" because although I felt like they gave us the room to express our opinions, management always has the final say when making a decision. They indeed emphasized having that separation between management and employee. Now Hertz falls under the characteristic of "participation." During my time at Hertz, I have experienced a sense of independence. The management always included the staff in decision making and told us that our influence on decisions really benefited the company.
