For this assignment, I want you to brainstorm five personal experience topics that you could give a speech on. In other words, they should be topics that you would need to do little research, because you have a lot of personal knowledge and experience. For example, you could choose a hobby you are interested in like collecting baseball cards or a specific video game. Another example could be about a job that you have had before like being a server or landscaper. Yet another example could be on an experience like visiting another country or running a marathon. The more unique the experience the better. Don't choose an experience the majority of the class has had, like going to college or growing up in Michigan. Also don't pick a topic that is passive, like watching a television series or listening to a podcast. It should be about an experience that requires you to do something.

1. overcoming my fear in public speaking

2. I like to cook

3. A significant life event that taught me something valuable was to finish school.

4. balancing work and studies

5. having a child motivated me to have a better life

Once you have your five experiences brainstormed, create a working outline for the three you are the most interested in presenting. The working outlines should have at minimum:

  • an attention grab
  • specific purpose/central idea
  • main points

Feel free to use the sample posted in Microlesson #4 as a template.

The final submission should include the five brainstormed topics and three working outlines.
