For this assignment, students will select an organization to analyze its culture and propose cultural changes to enhance its fitness and performance in relation to emerging trends and demands. Suggestions for the company will be provided by the instructor that students can choose from or they can select their own firm to work on upon the instructors approval. Students should select a company that they can find a sufficient amount of information related to key dimensions of its culture. Students will utilize the Competing Values Framework (CVF) to assess and analyze the firms culture in the following sequence: 1. Use the CVF to identify the companys current culture profile. This can include acquiring information about the culture of the past and present with an emphasis on key events or decisions, important rites or rituals, and underlying assumptions and values that have shaped the culture. 2. Identify the organizations future or preferred culture profile. Students can explore and discuss the elements of the culture that have been strengths and contributed to successes, as well as any areas where the organization may need to change or adapt. 3. Discuss what any changes mean and do not mean. For instance, a culture profile that reduces hierarchy does not mean that there will be no policies or rules; a culture that increases attention to the market does not mean ruthlessness or bypassing colleagues opinions. 4. Create an action plan to capitalize on internal cultural strengths and/or to overcome the weaknesses. This can include immediate changes, even small ones, which demonstrate the culture change. 5. Provide a technical discussion on supporting mechanisms for the culture change, such as leadership development, rewards and metrics, and communications throughout the organization.
