For this assignment, you are to examine a communication event. It can be face to face or mediated/online. The important thing to consider when choosing your event to analyze is that it is rich with interaction, not something too simple. The focus of your examination and analysis will be the nonverbal communication and how it impacts perception, the message, relationships, image and overall interaction. The quality of your analysis will be dependent on the richness of the event and your description. If you are unsure of your choice, you can discuss it with me before conducting your analysis.

Your analysis needs to include:

• Introduction: capture the readers attention; introduce your topic, purpose, and preview main points. 1 point
• Description: Rich, detailed description of the types of nonverbal communication in your event. Consider facial expressions, eye contact, gestures, touch, smell, paralanguage, proxemics, clothing, physical attractiveness and physical environment. If you choose a mediated event, be creative in your description, consider the use of space on a Facebook page, the environment surrounding someone during a Skype call, the timeliness of a text response and use of emojis, abbreviations, etc... 5 points
• Analysis: Thoughtful analysis of the functions of nonverbal communication as they relate to your communication event. Nonverbal communication plays an important part in how we relate to others:
  • Creating and maintaining relationships
  • Regulating interaction
  • Influencing others
  • Concealing and deceiving
  • Managing impressions

In your analysis, compare and contrast how the nonverbal signals you described help maintain the relationship, play a role in regulating interaction or help shape the impression someone wants others to have of him or her.
