For this assignment, you will be conducting research to find sources based on the topic you had selected in Module 1. Later this semester, you will be using these same sources to work on the rest of the research project.

For any research project, you have a series of steps to complete (see the document "Research Process" in Module 1). By this point, you have completed the first 4 steps. The thesis/hypothesis can be composed later). You are on Step 5 for this assignment: Find Sources. As with any research, you can find all kinds of sources for any topic, but not all of them will be good sources. Think about movie reviews, restaurant reviews, or even product reviews that you might find online. Do you always think those reviews are all worthwhile? Obviously, they are not. Buying a new car? You're going to find some sites that say Ford makes the best vehicles. Some are going to say Chevrolet is the best brand. Some will say that Tesla is over rated, but the Atlis brand is better. By the way,the Atlis brand is new (based in Arizona), so you may not be familiar with them. How can you find out more? Research! Regardless, you will find so many websites espousing so many different opinions, which reviews should you believe? You may find 100 different websites, but do you want to use 100 different websites? No. You will want to choose the best sources for your purpose.

Finding the best sources requires effective research. Which of those 100 websites will you want to use? You may be tempted to just use the first website you find, but that may not be the best source for your research. The first step is to find the sources that you might use. You will need to look at those web sources, looking at different characteristics of those websites, but you need to discover them, first. Examination and evaluation comes next. The step of discovery must come first. Later, you will be able to narrow down the sources you have found based on your analysis and evaluation, but once you discover those sources, you need to keep track of them. Before you go to the dealerships to find those vehicles, you may save those websites on your phone history to be able to access them later.

The APA Formatted References Page assignment is very similar to that action. For your own personal research, you may be able to save the web links. For academic work, you need to provide more details for your audience. This is why we use different documentation methods. In the social sciences, APA format is used. In other cases, APA may be used, but so might CSE, MLA, Turabian, or other methods. Depending on who your audience is, you will want to provide them a good method to keep track of the sources you have found and to be able to find those sources. You can not just tell your audience that you found the information somewhere; you need to be able to tell them where you found it, and you need to allow them to see it for themselves.

For this assignment, you should use the FTCC Library to find your sources. Please review the "FTCC Library Use Overview 2022" document in Module 2 to discover the best way to find academic sources. Using this guide, discover at least 6 possible sources for your chosen topic. For the annotated bibliography, you will need to have at least 4-6 sources, as well, so I recommend that your APA formatted references list have 8 to 10 sources, to allow for analysis and evaluation of those sources as you move on with this project. In that analysis and evaluation of the sources, you may discover that some of them are not as good as you thought they may be, so later you may want to remove those poor sources from your research.

Once you have those sources, you need to use the APA guides available to you to create references page citations for each of the sources. This includes a series of required information about each source, such as author(s), dates of publication, titles, publishers, locations, etc. Depending on the type of source you have, you will need different information, so pay attention to the guides! You can use the APA guide in the appendix of your textbook, or from the Little Seagull textbook we use in ENG 111 (if you still have it), or the OWL at Purdue University website, or other reliable APA guides (many are available). What you do NOT want to use would be citation creators, like the Citation Machine, Easy Bib, Quill Bot, or the MS Word References tab. Using those automatic citation creators will create more errors. They are quick and dirty methods, and while they may give some semblance of a citation, they usually do not create correct citations.

If you need a guide, you can use the FTCC library itself. On the FTCC library detailed citation for each source, you can obtain a sample citation by clicking on the "Cite" button on the right side of the screen. A new window insert will pop up, and you will need to choose the citation format you need (APA and MLA are available here, as well as quite a few other methods). Be sure to select the citation method you should use for your project. In this case, choose APA format. Be forewarned: this citation is still a created reference (like Citation Machine), so it may not be correct. Most of the citations I have seen from the library have had errors, some small errors, some very large errors. You will need to review each citation for your sources and compare them to the samples for those same kind of sources in the APA guide at OWL at Purdue to make sure they are correct.

Once you have a reference page citation for each of your sources in APA format, paste them in an APA references page document. Be sure to follow APA reference page guidelines including spacing and font, alphabetical order, and using the hanging indent. Instructions for formatting are in the "Formatting Documents for ENG 112" section of the Blackboard site for our class. The general guidelines for APA format are available in your textbook or at the OWL at Purdue website I identified above.

Your initial references page is vital to any academic research project, in whatever method you are using. Moving forward, this list of references will be necessary.
