V-Healthy Pet Inc. 2 Case Study

V-Healthy Pet Inc. is a well-established company in the pet food processing industry. It specializes in high quality plant-based (vegan) pet food. The company provides a range of healthy vegan meals for animals and healthy packaged vegan pet food to a large number of stores and distributors in Canada.

The company is a Canadian company, which was founded in 2016 in Halifax, Nova Scotia and has built its reputation on the reliability and quality of its natural, plant-based, GMO-free ingredients.

Currently the company employs 22 workers on a full-time basis. Two of the workers are foreign nationals, working with a work permit. Both occupy the position of Food Mixer. One of the foreign workers holds an open work permit (valid until January 2nd, 2024) and the other foreign national holds an LMIA based work permit (valid until January 2nd, 2024).

The company creates its own unique recipes. The entire process of mixing and blending the ingredients, cooking, processing, and packaging the meals takes place within the company premises and requires sophisticated machinery. The unique recipes that they create, process, and package within the company contain all the required protein, are completely vegan, and made from whole foods supplemented with vitamins and minerals. The process is delicate and requires a worker with the right competence in machine manipulation. In early 2019, the company invested around $800,000 CAD in installing new equipment and industrial machineries to create new lines of production. For this reason, the company is currently looking for a Pet Nutritionist.

The company is eager to fill in the position with the right candidate as they are struggling to achieve their productivity goals and are looking for a specialist who can study the varied nutritional needs of different species to formulate balanced food rations and to assess the nutritional and caloric requirements based on an animal's condition and type of physical activity such as performance and reproduction.

The company immediately starts to advertise the position on Job Bank, Indeed, Monster, and in local newspapers. The advertisement is placed for several weeks.

The job description is as follows:

  • assessing the relative nutritional values of various feeds
  • supporting the work of agricultural advisers/consultants
  • visiting farms
  • interpreting forage analysis
  • using specialist computer software to devise diets and produce reports
  • working with clients to formulate diets that meet their requirements/objectives
  • analyzing nutritional disorders
  • maintaining awareness of technical and scientific developments

Completion of a Bachelor's degree in biology is required and English is the required language. The position offers a wage of $38.50 CAD per hour for 40 hours per week and overtime pay of 1.5% ( means 1.5 times the hourly rate) after 44 hours. The position is located at the company's site in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

35 candidates viewed the Job Bank advertisement. Five were rated four+ stars and the rest were two+ stars according to the Job Match Tool. They were invited to apply within 30 days of the job's announcement. Another 23 Canadian citizens/permanent residents applied from other sources.

After reviewing the candidates who applied, the HR department interviewed 11 candidates and was able to hire one Canadian citizen for the position of Plant Manager. The remaining candidates were mostly found to lack sufficient experience in researching and planning diets based on organic, raw, and nutritionally balanced ingredients. The HR department was not convinced that they could efficiently handle the company's specific and delicate recipes.

The company found Mrs. Kari Hixen, a citizen of India working in Denmark. Based on her profile, she is well suited to the position. For several years, she has been worked as a pet food nutritionist and consultant in a well-known company in Denmark specializing in organic animal food processing. She has dedicated five years of her life to this company.

She is an impeccable candidate and has acquired advanced experience in her field conducting research and in planning nutritional diets that the Canadian company is currently looking for. She can speak and write in English. She has a Bachelor's degree in biology and has two awards from workshops related to her field. The Canadian company appreciates these awards and none of the previous candidates who applied had awards in the field.

V-Healthy Pet Inc. is determined to offer Mrs. Hixen the position as they are convinced that she will be an important asset. There is no labor dispute in progress at the place of work that involves V-Healthy Pet Inc. The company confirms that this position is not unionized.

This assignment is based on similar information to that presented in Tutorial 3. This was done intentionally to give you the opportunity to familiarize yourself with the company and relevant considerations before completing the assignment. However, the differences between the two cases are important, and for the purposes of this assignment, you should assume that the first company in Saskatchewan and first LMIA application does not exist.

Your assignment should be uploaded in two separate, clearly labelled PDFs.

  1. The first PDF should includeyour submission letter, a detailed named list of the supporting documents that should be included, and a copy of the relevant NOC code and wage report.
  2. The second PDF should includeyour memorandum explaining your approach with the submission and why you elected to include or exclude certain facts and/or documents.
