Multiple Intelligence information

The theory of multiple intelligences (MI) was developed in 1983 byDr. Howard Gardner,professor of education at Harvard University.

Howard, a developmental psychologist, suggests that the traditional notion of intelligence (based on I.Q. testing) is far too limited.

According toHoward Gardner, people have multiple intelligences and IQ tests measure only a few of these. Think of the movieRain Man,featuring a person with autism who has an extraordinary skill in the math domain. Think ofBeethovenwho was skilled at music; but did not do well in math or English.

Everyone is born possessing the 8 intelligences, but come into the classroom with a different set of developed intelligences. This means that each child will have his/her own set of intellectual strengths and weaknesses.

The intelligences are the following:

  1. Linguistic or Verbal Learner ("Word Smart")
  2. Logical- Mathematical Learner ("Math Smart")
  3. Spatial Learner ("Picture Smart")
  4. Musical Learner ("Music Smart")
  5. Body-Kinesthetic Learner ("Body Smart")
  6. Interpersonal Learner ("People Smart")
  7. Intrapersonal Learner ("Self Smart")
  8. Naturalist Learner ("Nature Smart")
  9. Existential Learner (This intelligence was added later.)

Gardner believes that everyone has all of these intelligences but to varying degrees. He believed these intelligences are often linked together. They rarely operate independently. As a result, we prefer to learn and process information in different ways. People learn best when they can apply their strong intelligences to the task.

These sets determine how easy (or difficult) it is for a student to learn info when it's presented in a particular manner. This is referred to as aLEARNING STYLE.
