For this formal essay/paper, you will explore multiple perspectives on the meaning of a chosen term. Here is the list of terms from which you may choose: Cultural literary, Human Rights, Family, Community, Student.
Your task is to answer the question "What does _______________(your chosen term here)_________ mean in American today? You may focus on the strictest definition of the term, or you may choose to explore other extended definitions of the term. Your thesis sentence will STATE (not in question format) what your assertion is about your chosen term. Please note that this is NOT an argument paper; it is an exploration paper.
Unlike other essays that assert and then support a thesis statement, an Exploratory Essay simply examines and explains what other sources are saying about the issue. For this second version of your paper, you are using the SAME term as for your first paper in this class (the one with only an intro paragraph and a body paragraph). And for this complete paper, you will not be using APA formatting. Rather you will be using MLA formatting. This means that instead of using paraphrased material, you will be using direct quotes. These are documented differently than the APA formatted paper. Consult your library assignment to see the differences.
For this Exploratory Essay, you will examine, explain and interpret what FIVE separate sources say about the term you are exploring. Each of your sources must come from the TCC library databases (electronic or paper). This is on purpose; you must become skilled at locating academic quality sources in the library.
Since you already have an intro paragraph from your last assignment, you can use that same introductory paragraph. You also have a first body paragraph. The only changes you have to make here is that you must convert the paraphrased material to direct quotes, and use correct in text citing. Along the way, you explain to your readers why the perspective and information these sources offer is valuable and how your thinking on the matter is evolving. Since you already have 2 TCC database research sources from your first assignment in your first paragraph, you will be adding only three more sources for the rest of your paper.
Then you will continue to add paragraphs using topic sentences that correspond directly to your thesis sentence. (See the first paper assignment to see how each partition of your thesis directs what the topic sentences will contain). Each paragraph will have a topic sentence that relates directly to a partition in your thesis, will contain quoted research material and will contain your own commentary on your subject.
You will also have a concluding paragraph that restates your thesis and wraps up your paper.
