Step 1
The first step is to identify the type of business you will develop. To accomplish this task, complete the following.
Brainstorm ideas for a business idea. Your list should include about 10 ideas.
Choose three that you will explore further.
For each of the three ideas, do some research to discover the following (some of the information will be the same for all three) For each, provide the source of your information:
Describe your business idea
In what city/town will you propose to open your business?
What is the population of the city/town in which you propose to open your business?
What is the demographic breakdown of the city/town in which you propose to open your business?
What is the demographic breakdown of the target market for your business?
Do the demographic of your target market and the demographic of your target city seem congruent?
Are there any current businesses in operation that are the same or similar to your idea?
In what ways do you feel your business idea fills a gap in what is currently offered in your target area?
Choose the one you would most like to pursue for the rest of the project.
Step 2
This step in the process involves designing the organizational culture of your business or organization.
Mission and Goals Statement An organizations mission is its driving force-its central belief or purpose. Goals are the actions or steps taken to accomplish the mission.
Create a mission statement for your business/organization.
Describe the steps you will take to accomplish the mission.
Values Values are topics of worth and importance.
Describe how the business values are reflected in the Mission and Goals
Roles and Relationships Roles refer to prescribed or expected models of organizational behavior and activity. Relationships in an organizational culture are the associations and interactions among its members.
Describe the organizational structure of your business/organization. This should include a hierarchy of employees, managers, etc. as well as protocols for how each will communicate with the other.
Reward and Recognition Reward and recognition addresses how employees receive merit and advance themselves within an organization.
Answer the following regarding your business/organization
What are the explicit and implicit methods of acknowledgement?
What qualities define success?
How do employees document and/or present their performance?
What paths exist for advancement?
How do individuals know when they deserve reprimand?
Leadership Structure and Style Organizational communication theorists Conrad and Pool (2002) describe leadership paradigms as organizational designs.
Choose the leadership/management perspective you will use for your business/organization (Chapter 2 in your textbook). Explain why you have chosen that perspective.
Organizational Identity and Image Create the following for your proposed business. These should reflect the organizational identity and image.
A company logo
The logo can be created using one of the many online free logo creators or you can create it yourselves. You will be required to submit in a digital format. So, if you draw one, you will need to somehow convert it to a .jpg or another digital format.
