For this project you will read one research study and provide a critical analysis. This project addresses the content of Chapter 2 - - that nutrition science is based on the scientific method, not opinions, testimonials, or 'hype.'
This assignment, choose a topic that interests you but has not been addressed thoroughly in the course, and make a question.Examples might be "Do breastfed babies suffer fewer allergies than those fed commercial formulas?" or "What is the long-term effect of the Keto diet?" or "How much protein is required for a body-builder?"Keep your question simple and specific.Access an academic research data base.(Do not use a report on research or a testimonial.)Choose one study that addresses your question.
Research Report
Student Choice Project
With so much nutrition information available in print and online, people are often misled into unhealthy ways of eating. This project introduces you to nutrition research and how to think about the results of ongoing research.
Find a research study in a reputable, scientific website on any nutrition topic that interests you.(Throughout the text, and in the appendix, many sites are suggested.)Or find a study in a scholarly journal in the El Camino College library.Be sure to access an original researchstudy, not a report on research.A study states the question, describes the process, and names the researchers and where the study was conducted. It does not suggest a diet or advertise a product or procedure. The ECC librarians are very helpful in guiding students to academic literature.
Read and report on the article.Your report is to be at least three, no more than five, typewritten pages, double spaced, size 10-12 font.Include the following:
Your thesis- - what do you want to learn? Why are you interested in this topic?Describe your personal involvement and state your specific questions.
The research- - what was discovered? Who conducted the study?Describe their methods and what they found.
An analysis- - - what do you think? What are your conclusions?State an unanswered question.Propose an idea for further research.Describe a flaw in the study.(A common flaw is industry support for a study which may influence the results.)
Quality Checklist - students can use this list to ensure all parts of the assignment have been addressed. The instructor will grade the project based on this checklist.
