For this week's assignment, I accessed the PACER demonstration site and searched for all federal cases filed in the Southern District of New York from January 1 to July 1, 2007. I selected the case titled "Johnson v. Astrue," which is a civil case involving the Social Security Administration. The plaintiff, Johnson, filed a lawsuit against Michael J. Astrue, who was the Commissioner of Social Security at the time. This case appears to involve an appeal of a denied Social Security Disability benefits claim. The docket includes several filings, such as the administrative record, motions for judgment on the pleadings, and eventually a final decision by the court. Based on the docket, it seems the court reviewed the case on the record without a full trial. When comparing PACER to Indiana's MyCase system, I found that MyCase is easier to use. It has a simpler interface, is free to access, and provides clear links to case details. PACER, while offering more extensive information on federal cases, is less user-friendly and has a more outdated design. The cost associated with PACER is also a downside, especially for users who are not frequent researchers. Overall, I prefer MyCase for convenience and accessibility.
